Birthing rates are a key metric produced in the Insights Production Summary.
This measures the offspring produced by available breeding stock. It is represented as a percentage with the formula of offspring ÷ breeding stock x 100
For example, if you farmed beef cattle, and had 134 calves born to 100 cows one spring, you would have a calving rate of 134%
The birth rate can be calculated at a farm level from a user’s production trackers.
The above image shows 380 births are forecast in the 2025 season. These will be divided by the breeding stock classes specified in the tracker settings:
MA Cows + R2 Heifers (457)
380 ÷ 457 x 100 = 83.15
The births specified in a farm’s tracker flow through to Insights, alongside the opening quantities which are used to calculate breeding rates.
However, instead of taking a specific farm’s settings into account to define what is breeding stock, Insights pre-defines breeding classes. This is to allow for appropriate averaging at the organisational level.
The list of set breeding classes per stock type are:
Sheep (NZ + AU)
5yr Ewes
